Afghanaid is a British international NGO (www.afghanaid.org.uk) that has been working in Afghanistan since 1983. Headquartered in Kabul, Afghanaid implements projects directly in 8 provinces and through partners in a further number of provinces and maintains a marketing and fundraising office in London. Afghanaid works in some of the most remote areas of the country and through a range of programme interventions supports development of basic services, such as water and sanitation, access roads, education facilities and other community infrastructure; strengthens livelihoods through improved natural resource management, agricultural and small enterprise development, and improved access to markets; and provides humanitarian assistance in times of emergencies. Gender mainstreaming, local governance and community development are integrated into all of Afghanaid’s work. The results achieved have earned Afghanaid the respect and recognition of stakeholders as an effective and collaborative charity.
Job Summary
- The Livestock Officer will oversee the planning and implementation of livestock and animal health management matters, as well as technical aspects related to dairy and livestock at the community level. He will work closely with livestock owners and VFUs to provide technical services, including the distribution of medicine, vaccines, and equipment. They will also supervise VFUs, conduct animal husbandry training such as housing, hygiene, feeding, urea treatment, and provide technical advice.
The Livestock Officer - Ghor will have responsibilities that include:
- The livestock officer will play a key role in the mobilization and transparent community selection process in the start off of the CARL project
- You will conduct daily visits to the project sites, providing information and technical advices to the communities.
- You will work to endorse selected climate resilient, sustainable and inclusive value chains to be targeted through the project in each target district.
- You will carry out the training and capacity-building activities for the watershed management groups and committees and producer groups.
- You will deliver training to the communities in appropriate animal health and welfare practices including all aspects of animal health, the importance of preventative treatment and veterinary services, fodder and feeding, grazing management, housing, and animal handling in the relevant district.
- You will work to establish the community fodder banks and train the livestock owners on how to manage them.
- You will work to reactivate veterinary field units that have ceased operations and provide them with training and guidance during the project's lifetime.
- You will work to connect the reactivated Veterinary Field Units (VFUs) with the communities. At the same time, you will raise awareness to increase demand for veterinary services by educating beneficiaries about animal health and helping them improve their financial capacity to invest in veterinary services.
- You connect the producer groups to local and regional markets, such as traders, transporters, wholesalers, shopkeepers, and input suppliers
- You will collaborate closely with project field staff and target livestock owners to ensure high-quality implementation of project activities. Monthly progress reports will be sent to track progress against agreed objectives and outcomes.
- You will undertake a mapping exercise to identify those organizations working in relevant fields in the target province and invite them to join exposure visits for observing and learn.
- You will closely collaborate with the operation and programme team in the procurement and distribution of project livestock inputs.
- You will document and share case studies, success stories and field visit reports as and when required.
- Instruct the target communities on personal and environmental hygiene, housing, water sanitation, dairy processing, and health care issues.
- You will provide support to enterprise officer to implement enterprise interventions.
- Perform any additional tasks as and when assigned by the line manager.
Job Requirment
- Education & Professional Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree from a well-recognized University in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
- Work Experience
- Experience of at least 3 years in animal health services with national or international organizations is required.
